On January 20, 2021, Hyundai Motor, South Korea East-West Electric Power Company and Deyang Company jointly held a completion ceremony for a hydrogen fuel cell power generation project independently developed by the three parties. The project was officially put into trial operation on the same day. The completion ceremony was held in the form of an online video. Relevant leaders from Hyundai Motor, Korea East-West Electric Power Company, Deyang Corporation, and Ulsan City, where the hydrogen fuel cell power generation project is located, attended the ceremony.
Previously, the three companies signed the "Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Generation Pilot Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)" in April 2019. According to the agreement, the three parties will cooperate to build a 1MW (megawatt) hydrogen fuel cell power generation system in Ulsan and promote pilot projects. Starting from the completion ceremony, the hydrogen fuel cell power generation project will carry out a 2-year demonstration operation.
The 1MW (megawatt) hydrogen fuel cell power generation system developed by Hyundai Motor contains two 500kW container-type power generation modules. The biggest feature is that each module is composed of multiple hydrogen fuel cell vehicles NEXO Composed of fuel cell stacks used on.
The hydrogen used in this hydrogen fuel cell power generation project is by-product hydrogen transported through pipelines from petrochemical plants in Ulsan. It can generate approximately 8,000MWh (megawatt hours) of electricity per year. With a household monthly usage of 300kWh, it can supply power to approximately 2,200 households. Thanks to the modular structure of multiple NEXO hydrogen fuel cell stacks integrated in containers, the supply can be expanded to tens or even hundreds of MW (megawatts) in the future depending on the number of containers.
Not only that, compared with existing fuel cell power generation systems, Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell power generation system has advantages in rapid output control. Hyundai Motor has applied on-board hydrogen fuel cell technology in this system, which can quickly adjust power generation in real time and achieve efficient power supply, thereby solving the problem of power supply fluctuations from sustainable energy sources such as solar energy and wind energy.
In addition, through pilot projects, Hyundai Motor, Korea East-West Electric Power Company, and Deyang Corporation are expected to significantly increase the localization rate of components in South Korea’s domestic fuel cell power generation market. In the past, most of the fuel cells used for power generation in South Korea were based on foreign technology, and the cost of parts replacement and maintenance was high. However, this pilot project introduces a purely independently developed hydrogen fuel cell power generation system to the market, which will help further reduce the cost of fuel cell systems and The price of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
