Siemens acquires Avatar to expand EDA landscape through innovative placement and routing technology

Siemens recently signed an agreement to acquire Avatar Integrated Systems (Avatar) headquartered in California, USA. Avatar is a developer specializing in place and route software for integrated circuit (IC) design, helping engineers optimize the power, performance, and area (PPA) of complex chips with fewer resources. Siemens plans to add Avatar's technology to the Xcelerator solutions portfolio as part of the Mentor IC software suite to address the growing place-and-route market segment. Avatar will integrate with Mentor's products, including the Caliber® platform, Tessent™ software and Catapult™ HLS software, to help customers develop solutions that address current and future design implementation challenges.

Avatar’s products are built on the technology of AtopTech acquired in 2017. The product line includes Aprisa, a full-featured module-level physical implementation tool from netlist to GDS, and Apogee — Complete top-level prototype production, bottom-level planning and chip assembly tools. Avatar's products have now been certified by many industry semiconductor fabs (including 28nm and 7nm), and are currently developing 6nm and 5nm versions.
The acquisition is expected to be completed in the second half of 2020, and the terms of the transaction have not been disclosed
